ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

We are members of the UK book community who care about free speech, human rights and climate change.

We are proud to be part of a community which has a history of standing up for others – with campaigns to support victims of Typhoon Haiyan and the Syrian conflict. We hope this campaign will encourage further discussion and engagement with social and environmental issues.

Nestlé and Amazon-sponsored book awards have been shelved in recent years as a result of UK authors and illustrators objecting to their sponsors on ethical grounds. We hope that, by highlighting ethical concerns about the airline and the government that owns it, this campaign will persuade many authors and illustrators that accepting sponsorship from Emirates Airline ought to be similarly objectionable.

Many authors and illustrators we admire and respect have attended the festival in the past. Although we hope that the campaign will encourage authors and illustrators to think twice about attending future Emirates-sponsored festivals, we don't intend to single out individual authors who are planning to attend. The only people the campaign wishes to point the finger at are the airline and the government that owns it.

The campaign was instigated by author Jonathan Emmett and book blogger Zoe Toft.
